About the Practice

David Newell, MD is an experienced neurosurgeon and cerebral vascular specialist in Seattle specializing in the microsurgical treatment of the brain, spine, and cerebrovascular system. Dr. Newell is currently licensed to practice medicine in Washington and California, and he’s affiliated with Swedish Medical Center-Cherry Hill Campus.

After earning his undergraduate degree at Boston University, Dr. Newell went on to work as a research assistant at Harvard Medical School before completing his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

In 1988, Dr. Newell moved west to pursue residencies in neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Washington. While there, he ran a science laboratory, trained residents and fellows, and developed an innovative model to study brain damage and the prevention of neural death. Dr. Newell spent 15 years as a member of the University of Washington School of Medicine faculty.

Throughout his career, Dr. Newell’s research interests have centered around the mechanisms the brain uses to protect itself from damage against injury or reduced blood flow. He was the first neurosurgeon in the United States to research and publish results on the use of transcranial Doppler ultrasound in neurosurgical patients. He also introduced this technology in the US as part of the care and treatment of head injuries, cerebral aneurysms, and strokes.

Over the years, Dr. Newell has received numerous awards and grants, published hundreds of articles, and edited four books. He’s also one of the original authors of the Guidelines for the Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Dr. Newell is the founder and owner of the Seattle Neuroscience Institute. He is also the co-founder of the Swedish Neuroscience Institute (SNI) in Seattle. Dr. Newell was an acting chief of neurosurgery at Harborview Medical Center, where he founded the first stroke center in the Pacific Northwest.
